Remembering

Last year my classmates and the art therapy community lost a great mentor, Carol Lark. This week, my class learned that we had lost a classmate, Adrienne. It is at times like this that my words fail me and I turn to art.

For some moments in life there are no words. ~ Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

So I got out a canvas that I had, and began painting. I knew that the labyrinth would be an important part of the image—for the metaphor of the journey, as well as for Carol. I also knew that I wanted to represent all of my classmates. I also had thought that I wanted to include birds. When Chris remarked that it looked like a tree, the image came together. My classmates represented as birds in the tree, with Carol and Adrienne represented by the birds flying. When I was reminded in a facebook post of Carol's mantra "remember to breathe" the image was complete. Adrienne and Carol, you will always hold a place in my heart. This is for you.

  2. Thanks ladies it has been hard but I am so glad that I had my art to go to. One of thr hardest parts is she left behind her 8 year old son. My classmates and others plan on creating art for him about his mother.

  3. Kelly, I am Adrienne's mom. Your portrait made me cry and I would be honored and so humbled if you would allow me to share it and your story at Adrienne's Celebration of Life on Thursday. She would be so proud and I want everyone to see/know what Art Therapy is all about and how important it was to Adrienne. I know she also has an Art Journal somewhere in her apartment and I can't wait to find it and when it's very quiet, go through it with her. I don't know how I'm supposed to go on without her. She was my firstborn and my best friend and my heart is just broken.

  4. Dear Christine, please feel free to use at the memorial. I am glad that it meant as much to you as it did to me. You and everyone who loved Adrienne are in my thoughts!
